Traditional Ceremonies and Cacao Spirit

Cacao tradition belongs to the Ancient Mayan and Aztec Civilizations. The ceremonies were conducted by shamans as preparation for the shamanic journeying, as healing and celebration. In the modern world this powerful tradition is carried by those who feel called by the spirit of the plant.

In the Mayan tradition it was believed that the cacao was a gift from gods to restore balance and connection to the divine. Cacao was used in marriage ceremonies, childbirth, funerals and preparation for afterlife. It was a communal practice.

What to Expect during Cacao Ceremony

Each cacao ceremony starts with gathering in the circle. First you will get to know everyone that is taking a part. Then Ania will open the sacred space with smudging and Cacao spirit activation. You will be asked to reconnect with your intention for the ceremony. The whole time we spend time together, we do it in very highly respectful way. After we drink the cacao we might start with a nice relaxing meditation. Then depending on the length of the gathering, we might surrender into a healing modality, listen to the music, do breathing techniques, get acupuncture, let our bodies to release tension through  movements and dance. We might journal, pull a card and talk. We will end the ceremony in the circle expressing and summarizing our experiences.

While being in the sacred space, you will be asked to take your shoes off and wear comfortable clothes to feel comfortable. You might bring a yoga mat, blanket and pillow.

Ania Haas

It’s important to know that the most beautiful experience is when you don’t set any expectations. It’s much more relaxing to purely surrender and enter the flow of the ritual.

  1. don’t eat any foods 4 hours before
  2. think and feel your intention for few days before the ceremony
  3. you might be surprised that ceremonial cacao is much less sweeter than chocolate that you know
  4.  During the ceremony, you might notice others being anxious even tearing up, accept that everyone feels the cacao in the different way. Practice acceptance and find harmony with that.
